The Frequency of Summer: A Mary Oliver Poem About Being Alive in a Broken World

creative expression faith presence Aug 18, 2025

"Oh do you have time to linger for just a little while out of your busy and very important day for the goldfinches that have gathered in a field of thistles for a musical battle, to see who can sing the highest note, or the lowest, or the most expressive of mirth, or the most tender? Their strong, blunt beaks drink the air as they strive melodiously not for your sake and not for mine and not for the sake of winning but for sheer delight and gratitude – believe us, they say, it is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in the broken world. I beg of you, do not walk by without pausing to attend to this rather ridiculous performance. It could mean something. It could mean everything." - Mary Oliver

Thank you Hashem (God) for summer.

Thank God, not only for summer but for the frequency of summer. I've had many summers that were: Summer; the Season. But not, Summer; the Frequency.

The frequency of summer is warm and fun, adventurous, mysterious, sexy, alive, spacious, open, possibility.

The frequency of summer is fireflies and bug bites, water and trees and flowy clothes that breathe.

The frequency of summer also holds birth and death along with sunsets, heartbreak, prayer, water, friendship, and spontaneity.

The frequency of my summer holds all of it.

Thank you Hashem for this full spectrum life.

Please give my friends and family and clients and myself good health... in mind, body, and soul to keep LIVING. I will try with all my might not to take it for granted.

"It is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in the broken world. I beg of you do not walk by without pausing."
